In just nine simple words, the Apostle James penned one of the most convicting sentences in the entire Bible.
You do not have, because you do not ask.
The answer to many of the issues you are facing in your life right now may be as simple as this: prayerlessness.
A couple years ago, I preached on this passage, and I asked the question, “What are we missing out on because we are not praying?” Many answers jumped to mind — like intimacy with God, fruitfulness in ministry, and victory over sin.
Yet, as I was studying for that sermon, one thought filled my mind with conviction and wonder at the same time:
We don’t even know what we’re missing out on.
Think about it. Jesus talks about people moving mountains through prayer (Matthew 21:21-22). We serve a God who is able to do “far more abundantly than all we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20:21). He is a great God who does great things – greater than we can even imagine. So when we fail to pray, we are not merely missing out on things that we can comprehend. We are missing out on more than we could ask or think!
I hope this encourages you to pray. Get to a place in your life where you cannot fathom a day going by without spending time alone with God in prayer. Pray persistently like the widow in Jesus’ parable (Luke 18:1-8). Get on your knees and call out expectantly to God as you ask him to do great things – greater than you could imagine.
I also hope these thoughts encourage you to join Compass Bible Church in prayer this week. Beginning on Wednesday at 7pm, we will be spending 24 hours in prayer for the launch of our latest church plant. You can pray along with any portion of that via livestream at compasschurch.org. Then we are having an all-church prayer meeting at 6:15pm on Thursday evening at the church. Trust me, you want to be there, or you won’t even know what you’re missing.
